Printful Review 2026: What It’s Like Running a Store on It (Honest Take)

Printful is the print-on-demand company our own store runs on, which makes this the easiest review on the site to write and the hardest to keep honest. We’ve used it for years across two shops, we’re using it right now for Underfoot & Co, and we still have a list of things we wish it did differently. Both halves are below.
The one-sentence version of Printful: it owns its factories. Every other big platform is a network of someone else’s printers. Printful prints your order in a Printful building, on Printful machines, to one Printful standard, and ships it from whichever of its facilities is closest to your customer. Everything good and everything expensive about it follows from that.
Short verdict: Printful is the platform to pick if you want to never think about who printed the order, and the best one for building an actual brand with labels and packaging. You pay a few dollars more per unit for that. If margin is the thing you care about most, read our Printify review and the head-to-head before you decide.
what printful actually is
Printful is a vertically integrated print-on-demand fulfillment company. You connect it to your store (Etsy, Shopify, and about twenty others), build products in its Design Maker, push them to your listings, and when an order comes in Printful prints, packs, and ships it under your brand. You’re charged the product cost plus shipping; the difference between that and your retail price is your profit.
Its facilities are in Charlotte, Dallas, Tijuana, Toronto, Riga, Barcelona, and Birmingham in the UK, with partner facilities covering Brazil, Japan, and Australia. Orders route to the nearest one automatically. Since late 2025 Printful and Printify have both been owned by a parent company called FYUL; they still operate as entirely separate platforms with separate accounts, catalogs, and pricing, and nothing in the day-to-day has changed because of it.
the catalog: smaller, but every item is the same item
Printful lists around 550 products versus Printify’s 1,300-plus. That gap is real, and if you’re after unusual items (car accessories, some pet goods, oddball home decor) you’ll find them elsewhere first. What Printful covers, it covers well: the standard apparel blanks (Bella+Canvas, Gildan, Comfort Colors, Champion, Next Level), all-over-print cut-and-sew, embroidery on hats and apparel, drinkware, posters and canvas, phone cases, totes, and a growing home-goods range including ornaments and blankets.
The important difference isn’t the count. On Printify, a Gildan 18500 hoodie is offered by several providers at several prices and qualities. On Printful, it’s one product at one price, printed the same way every time. You lose the ability to shop around. You gain the ability to stop worrying.
what it costs in 2026
The platform is free. There’s one paid plan, and the tiering got simpler recently:
- Free — $0. Full catalog, unlimited connected stores, the Design Maker with its stock-visual library, 20% off sample orders. Most people should start here.
- Growth — $24.99/month, 14-day free trial. Up to 33% off products, 9% off branding, 25% off samples, free embroidery digitization on samples, and some exclusive larger print areas. Once your store passes $12,000 in annual sales, Growth becomes free for a year. That threshold is net of discounts, shipping, and tax, and it’s checked at the end of each billing cycle.
- The old Business plan was folded into Growth in January 2025 — there is no separate higher tier anymore apart from custom enterprise arrangements.
Is Growth worth it? Same math as any POD subscription: if the discount on your typical product is a true 25% on a $12 item, you save $3 an order, and $24.99 breaks even at about eight or nine orders a month. Under that, stay free. Over it, the plan pays for itself — and the $12K free-year rule means a shop doing real volume never pays for it at all, which is a better deal than anything Printify offers. Our fee calculator shows how much of your retail price is actually left after Etsy takes its cut.
real product prices
Because there’s one price per product, Printful is easier to quote than Printify. Current ballparks on the free plan, before shipping:
- Bella+Canvas 3001 t-shirt: roughly $12–$14; the cheapest basic tee (Gildan Softstyle class) about $8.
- Gildan 18500 hoodie: roughly $22–$28.
- 11 oz white glossy mug: $5.95 — this is our own Underfoot mug, so that number is first-hand. And a wrap print is one print job, so putting the design on both sides of the mug costs nothing extra.
- Posters: from about $5.50.
- US shipping: a flat $3.99 for the first apparel item and about $2 for each additional. Accessories shipping went up slightly in February 2026; apparel didn’t.
Across the board that’s 10–20% higher than the cheapest Printify provider for the same blank, and about the same as Printify’s better-rated providers. That’s the fair way to read it: you’re not paying a premium over good quality, you’re paying a premium over the option to gamble on cheap quality. Pull live prices from the dashboard before you set your own; Printful adjusts them a couple of times a year.
the features that matter
- Branding. This is Printful’s clearest lead. Inside labels ($0.99), outside labels ($2.49), pack-ins, custom packaging, and branded packing slips. If your plan is a real brand rather than a set of listings, no other mainstream platform matches this.
- Mockup generator. The best in the category. Multi-scene lifestyle sets in one click, and they push straight to Etsy. One gotcha we learned the hard way: the scene thumbnails in the “choose mockup” panel render as blank products even when your design is applied — they’re style previews, not renders. Click through and check the real one before you panic.
- Design Maker. Adequate for text designs and placement, with a large stock-graphics library. For anything you’d be proud of, make the file in the tools we actually use and upload it. One placement note for mugs: the “center” guide on the wrap canvas is the edge-on view nobody sees. Place your design on the two side guides.
- Embroidery. Hats, polos, beanies, and left-chest logos on apparel. Digitization fees apply on the free plan ($2.95–$6.50), waived on samples for Growth members.
- Warehousing. Printful will store and ship your non-POD inventory alongside print orders. Niche for a beginner, but it’s there when you outgrow pure POD.
- Quick Stores. A free hosted storefront (up to ten of them) so you can sell without a Shopify subscription. Basic, no traffic of its own, fine for testing with an audience you already have.
integrations
Twenty-two platforms and marketplaces: Etsy, Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix (with a native POD experience, covered in our Wix + Printful guide), Squarespace, BigCommerce, eBay, Amazon, TikTok Shop, and more. The Etsy and Shopify integrations are the most polished we’ve used on any platform — the Etsy setup and the Shopify connection each take a few minutes. Walmart was discontinued in 2025.
production and shipping speed
Printful quotes 2–5 business days of production before an order ships, plus 3–7 days for standard US delivery. In our experience the production estimate is honest most of the year and drifts toward the top of the range in November and December, which is why our Q4 timeline builds in buffer. The multi-facility routing does what it says: US orders ship from the US, EU orders from Riga or Barcelona, and international customers don’t wait three weeks the way they do with a single-country supplier.
where printful falls down
- It costs more. There’s no way around it. On a $25 tee, Printful’s base price versus the cheapest Printify provider is the difference between a good margin and a great one. If you’re selling on Etsy, where the fees already take a real bite, that matters.
- Smaller catalog. If your niche lives on a product Printful doesn’t make, no amount of quality helps.
- Shipping damage is the top complaint, not print quality. Read a hundred negative reviews and that’s the pattern: the print was fine, the box wasn’t. Printful reships, but it’s your customer who waited.
- Support slows down in Q4, like every POD company. Plan for it.
- Price adjustments arrive without much warning. A couple of times a year the base price on a product ticks up. Check your margins quarterly rather than once at launch.
why our store is on printful
When we started Underfoot & Co from zero this summer, we picked Printful for a reason that has nothing to do with it being “better”: with ten listings and no idea what would sell, we didn’t want to research eight print providers per product or sample every combination. One standard, one dashboard, best-in-class mockups, and a mug that costs $5.95. That let us spend the time on designs and listings instead of supplier vetting.
We’re also clear-eyed that this is a beginner’s choice and that it costs us margin. Once a design proves itself, moving that one product to a vetted Printify provider and keeping the difference is the normal next step, and running both platforms side by side is what most experienced sellers end up doing. You’re not choosing a supplier for life. You’re choosing the one that gets you to your first sales with the fewest things to worry about, and for that, Printful is hard to beat.
who should use printful
Use it if:
- You’re a beginner who wants one quality standard and zero supplier research while you learn what sells.
- You’re building a brand and want labels, inserts, and custom packaging.
- Mockups matter to your listings (they should — on Etsy, photos are the listing).
- You sell embroidery, or all-over print, or ship a real share of orders to Europe.
- You’re heading toward $12K a year in sales, at which point the paid plan is free.
Skip it if:
- Margin is your first priority and you’re willing to sample products to protect it — that’s Printify’s game.
- Your niche depends on products Printful doesn’t carry.
- You sell mostly wall art and paper goods to an international audience, where Gelato is the specialist.
the verdict
Printful is the print-on-demand platform that asks the least of you and charges the most for it, and for a new seller that’s usually the right trade. The consistency is real, the branding options are the best available, the mockups sell products, and the $12K free-year rule quietly makes it the cheapest paid plan in the industry for a shop that actually works. Its weaknesses — price and catalog size — are exactly the things Printify does better, which is why the two now belong to the same company and why so many sellers use both.
Start free, connect it to Etsy, push ten products with the lifestyle mockups, and order one sample at 20% off. If the sample is good and the margin works in the calculator, you have a store.
