Print-on-Demand Christmas Ornaments 2026: Products, Suppliers & Order-By Dates

Ornaments are the strangest product in print on demand: for ten months of the year almost nobody searches for them, and then in December “personalized ornaments” jumps from nowhere to the seventh most-searched phrase on all of Etsy. eRank’s December 2025 keyword report has it at #7, up from #968 the month before. The buyers show up all at once, they want a name or a photo on it, and they want it in time for the tree.

That timing is the whole game. A personalized ornament is one of the cheapest products to make, one of the easiest to price at a premium, and one of the easiest to miss entirely — because if your listings aren’t indexed and photographed by early November, the wave passes you by. This guide covers the products, what they cost from the two suppliers we use, the order-by dates that decide whether an ornament arrives before Christmas, and the personalization workflow that turns a $6 blank into a $20 gift. We’re building our own for Underfoot & Co this month, so this is the research we did for ourselves.

the calendar, first, because it decides everything

Work backwards from Christmas (Friday, December 25 this year). Ornaments are made in the U.S. by sublimation or UV print and shipped by ground, and both major suppliers publish a last “order by” date for standard shipping. Neither has published 2026 dates yet — Printify says its deadlines are “usually announced by the middle of October,” and Printful updates its holiday page through late November. Last season’s dates are the best planning guide until then:

  • Printful (2025 season, U.S. fulfillment to U.S. address): home & living items ordered by December 11 for standard shipping, December 16 for express.
  • Printify (2025 season, target Dec 24 delivery): most U.S. providers between December 8 and December 11 for standard shipping; Printify Express extended it to December 17. One large provider added a day to ornament production times in December because of volume — expect that again.
  • USPS (2026, published Sep 22): Ground Advantage by December 17, Priority Mail by December 18, Priority Mail Express by December 19.

Now go one step further back. Etsy’s search doesn’t rank a new listing on day one; it needs days to weeks of views and favorites before it trusts the listing enough to show it. eRank’s own read of last December was that most ornament shoppers “weren’t even searching yet” in November, with the real peak in early-to-mid December. So the sequence looks like this: listings live by mid-October, so they’ve built a little history by the time searches start in November, so they’re ranking when the December wave hits, so orders arrive before the supplier cutoff in the second week of December. Our Q4 prep timeline has the full season laid out; this post is the ornament-specific slice of it.

the products: what’s actually available and what it costs

We pulled Printful’s prices from its catalog this week. Printify’s vary by print provider (that’s how Printify works — one product, several factories), so treat those as starting points and check the exact provider before you list.

printful

  • Ceramic ornament — circle (2.76″), heart, star, snowflake. $6.15–$6.34. One-sided, white back, gold string, sublimation print. This is the classic photo-and-name ornament and the one most buyers picture. A two-sided ceramic version also exists in Printful’s catalog.
  • Metal Christmas ornament — round 3.5″, bell, oval, tree; thin white aluminum. $4.61–$4.74, printed on both sides, sold as singles or in 3-, 5- and 10-packs. The cheapest option and the one that makes multi-packs (“the whole family”) work.
  • Wooden ornaments — bell, heart, oval, star, stocking, tree in hinoki wood with a magnetic back. $8.37 plus $1.49 if you print the back. UV print, so fine line art looks great; the rustic feel suits cottagecore and pet designs.
  • Acrylic ornaments — rectangle, scalloped, circle, heart. $7.80, one-sided, UV print. Clear acrylic shows off illustration-style designs.
  • Metal ornaments (thick aluminum) — rectangle, scalloped, pet paw, tag. $8.27, two-sided. The pet-paw shape is the one we’re using.
  • Glass ornament — 3.5″ beveled round. $19.00. Premium tier; only makes sense at a $35+ retail price.

Everything above is U.S.-made and ships with Printful’s normal home & living deadlines. If you don’t have an account yet, Printful is free to open and you pay per item only when something sells — same as the rest of our store.

printify

Printify lists ornaments across several providers, and its own blog quotes starting prices well under Printful’s — ceramic from about $1.77, acrylic from about $2.74, double-sided metal from about $4.65, wood from about $8.05 — though independent reviewers put the realistic floor closer to $4.50 once you pick a provider with decent reviews. The provider matters more than the number: reviewers who’ve ordered samples consistently rate the acrylic and wood two-sided options from the larger providers well and warn off the cheapest glass and acrylic ones. Order a sample. It costs a few dollars and it’s the only way to know what the buyer will unwrap.

Gelato, our usual third option, doesn’t offer ornaments at all as of this writing — its gifts catalog stops at mugs, cards, and calendars. If you run on Gelato, this is a product to add a second supplier for. Our Printful vs Printify comparison covers the broader tradeoffs; for ornaments specifically, Printful wins on predictability and Printify wins on price if you’re willing to test providers.

pricing: why ornaments carry a premium

On Etsy right now, personalized ornaments list between roughly $10 and $39, with most sale prices landing in the $8–$18 range after the near-universal “25% off” that ornament shops run in Q4. A realistic target for a print-on-demand personalized ornament is a $16–$24 list price with a sale that brings it to $12–$18. Against a $5–$8 blank plus a few dollars of shipping, that’s a healthier margin than a t-shirt — and it’s healthier still on a set, where the buyer pays $35–$50 for three or five and your shipping cost barely moves.

Run your numbers through the Etsy fee calculator before you set a price; Etsy’s 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing come off the top and a $14 sale nets less than it looks. Two pricing habits that work for ornaments: bake U.S. shipping into the price (free shipping gets a search boost and buyers expect it on a gift), and offer the same design as a single and as a 3-pack, because the 3-pack is where the profit is.

personalization: the part that makes it sell

The demand isn’t for ornaments. It’s for personalized ornaments — eRank’s #7 keyword was the personalized phrase, not the plain one — and Etsy reported that more than a quarter of all sales in its last holiday season included a personalization request. A name, a year, a pet’s name, “Baby’s First Christmas,” a family of five. That’s what people are buying.

Etsy renamed its personalization feature Custom options this summer, and it’s better than it was: up to five fields per listing, text boxes with a character limit you set, dropdown lists (font, color, “how many names?”), and since September, the ability to charge extra for a personalized text field. Set the field to required so you never get an order with the name missing. We’ll walk through the whole setup in a dedicated personalization post in a couple of weeks.

The part sellers underestimate is fulfillment. When a personalized Etsy order lands, someone has to put the name on the design before it goes to print, and the two suppliers handle that very differently:

  • Printful imports the order as a draft flagged “Requires personalization.” You open it, click Personalize order, type the name into the design in Printful’s editor, and submit it. It’s manual, per order, and takes about two minutes once you’ve done it a few times — fine at five orders a day, painful at fifty.
  • Printify has an automated flow for Etsy: you build the design with a personalizable text layer, it syncs to Etsy’s custom-option fields, and the buyer’s text is dropped into the layer and sent to production without you touching it. Anything odd (an unsupported file upload, a missing required field) is held for review.

If you’re planning a serious ornament season — dozens of orders in the December rush — Printify’s automation is a real reason to put ornaments there even if the rest of your shop runs on Printful. If you’re doing a handful, Printful’s manual step is a non-issue. Design the ornament once as a template with a clearly marked name area, and either path is fast.

designs that sell (and the ones to skip)

Ornament buyers are gifting or marking a moment, so the design is a frame for a name. The formats that dominate Etsy’s results every year: a family name and year on a wreath or plaid background; “first Christmas” milestones (baby, married, new home, in a new city); a pet’s name with a breed illustration; a couple’s names with a date; and photo ornaments, where the buyer uploads the picture. Match the shape to the design — a paw-shaped metal ornament for pets, a round ceramic for photos, wood for anything rustic.

Skip anything with a character, a team, or a brand on it. Ornaments are a trademark minefield precisely because buyers ask for their favorite team or show, and one takedown in December can freeze your shop for the season. Our niches guide covers the stacking trick that finds low-competition angles — a breed plus a milestone, a small town plus a year — and those stack beautifully onto ornaments. You don’t need to draw: the design tools we use get a template done in an afternoon, and Kittl in particular has strong lettering for the name-and-year style.

the listing checklist

  1. Title front-loaded with the buyer’s phrase — “Personalized Christmas Ornament” or “Custom Family Ornament 2026” in the first five words, then the sub-niche. The Etsy SEO guide has the full method.
  2. All 13 tags, mixing the generic (“personalized ornament”, “custom ornament 2026”) with the specific (“vizsla ornament”, “first christmas married”).
  3. First photo shows the personalization — a real name on the ornament, hanging on a real tree. A blank mockup doesn’t convert.
  4. Custom options set to required, with an instruction line that says exactly what you need (“Name(s) and year, e.g. The Millers 2026”).
  5. Processing time set honestly — 2–4 business days plus supplier production — and shortened to 1–2 days if your supplier is fast. Etsy’s estimated-delivery date is built from your processing time, and a buyer in December is watching it.
  6. Ship-by-date note in the description once supplier deadlines are published: “Order by December 10 for Christmas delivery.” It reduces “will it arrive?” messages to nearly zero.

what we’re doing at underfoot

Our first one is already live: a personalized vizsla design on Printful’s paw-shaped metal ornament, at $24.00 with free shipping and the name field set to required. One or two more designs are coming, and a 3-pack will wait until the singles prove themselves. We’ll report the results — orders, the ones that came in after the cutoff, what the personalization step actually cost in time — in the build-in-public updates.

If you’re starting from zero, the free starter guide walks through the shop setup, and how to start an Etsy shop covers the shop itself. Ornaments are a good first product precisely because the demand is so concentrated: you’ll know within six weeks whether your design works.
