How To Design Print-on-Demand Products With AI in 2026 (The Exact Workflow We Use)

“I can’t design” used to be the number one reason people never started print on demand. In 2026, that excuse is gone — AI image tools can turn a sentence you type into artwork in about thirty seconds.
But here’s what nobody tells you: the AI image is maybe 80% of the job. The last 20% — cleaning it up, converting it to the right file type, exporting it at the right size, and disclosing the AI use properly — is what separates a product that prints crisp and ranks on Etsy from one that comes out blurry or gets taken down.
This isn’t theory for us. This is the exact workflow we use for Underfoot & Co, the Etsy store we’re building in public on this site. Every step below is something we actually do, including a couple of mistakes we made so you don’t have to.
the honest part first
AI will not pick your niche, tell you what dog moms want on a sweatshirt, or make a design people emotionally connect with. That part is still on you, and it’s the part that actually makes money. What AI kills is the technical barrier — the drawing, the typography, the “I don’t own Photoshop” problem.

step 1 — generate the artwork (we use ideogram and chatgpt)
An AI image generator is a website where you type a description of the image you want — called a prompt — and it creates the image for you. There are dozens of them now. For print on demand, we use two: Ideogram (ideogram.ai) and ChatGPT‘s built-in image generation.
Why two? They’re good at different things. Most POD designs are words — a funny phrase, a “dog mom” line, a name with a year under it — and Ideogram was built to render text correctly, where older generators famously mangled words into alien squiggles. ChatGPT is what we reach for on illustrated art — detailed drawings, characters, scenes — and it’s handy because you can refine the image conversationally (“make the dog’s ears longer, remove the collar”) instead of rewriting the prompt from scratch. Both have free tiers you can learn on, with paid plans in the ~$20/month range when you’re generating seriously. Those numbers are as of July 2026; verify current pricing before you subscribe.

Two prompt rules we learned from real orders:
Rule 1: generate on a solid background. Add something like “on a plain white background” to your prompt. Here’s why: your design will eventually be printed on a shirt, so the background has to be deleted (step 2). If the AI puts your art on a busy scene, separating the design from the background is miserable. On a flat solid color, it’s one click.
Rule 2: ask for flat art, not a product photo. Tell the AI you want “flat vector-style artwork,” not a picture of a product. We once asked for a bandana design and got back a photograph of a bandana — stitched edges, fold lines, drop shadow, the works. That’s a mockup, not artwork, and you can’t print it. The AI doesn’t know the difference unless you tell it.
Expect to generate 10–20 variations before one feels right. That’s normal, not failure — the first prompt almost never nails it.
step 2 — remove the background
Your design needs a transparent background — meaning nothing behind the art, so the shirt color shows through. Think of it like a sticker: you want just the sticker, not the sheet of paper it came on.
If you followed Rule 1 above, this takes seconds. Ideogram has background removal built in, Canva has one, and free web tools do it in one click. Upload, click remove, download.
One warning: inspect the result closely, at full zoom. Some AI images come with faint “sparkle” watermarks or leftover background haze baked in near the edges of the art. On your screen at thumbnail size it’s invisible; printed across a 12-inch chest, it isn’t. We’ve caught watermarks hiding in designs that looked perfectly clean at first glance.
step 3 — vectorize, then export at print size
This is the step almost every beginner skips, and it’s why so much AI merch looks blurry in person.
Here’s the problem in plain English. AI generators output images at roughly 1024 pixels wide — fine for a phone screen, way too small for a shirt. A print file for a standard tee needs to be about 4500 × 5400 pixels at 300 DPI (DPI = dots per inch, the standard measure of print sharpness). If you upload the small file anyway, the printer stretches it to more than four times its size, and every edge goes soft. Printful will warn you — it rates uploads, and a 1024px file scores “Okay / 81 DPI,” which in practice means “will look muddy.”
The fix is vectorizing: converting your image from pixels into math — lines and curves the computer can redraw perfectly at any size. A vector file (usually an SVG) can be scaled to a billboard without losing sharpness. Tools that do this: vectorizer.ai, Kittl‘s built-in converter, or the free program Inkscape. Upload your PNG, get an SVG back.
Then export that SVG as a PNG at the real spec: 4500 × 5400 pixels, 300 DPI, transparent background, sRGB color. That’s your print file.
The hidden bonus: once your design is a vector, recoloring it takes minutes. A cream-colored design vanishes on a cream shirt — but in a vector you just swap the fill color to dark brown and export a second version. One design, a light-ink and a dark-ink file, and now it works on every shirt color. We do this for every Underfoot design.
step 4 — vet the design at print scale before you upload
Open your finished print file and zoom to 100% — the size it will actually print. Now hunt: mangled letters, melted details, extra fingers and fused shapes in illustrations, ghost text in the background, watermark remnants. AI art fails at full size in ways thumbnails completely hide.
Real example: one of our pattern designs looked great as a thumbnail. At 100% zoom, two of the dogs in the repeating pattern were melted into smears. We repaired them by copying clean dogs from elsewhere in the pattern before it went anywhere near a product. Five minutes of zooming saved us from selling a defective print.
If you find problems you can’t fix, regenerate — credits are cheap, refunds aren’t.
step 5 — the disclosure step most sellers skip
If you sell on Etsy, this part is not optional. Etsy’s Creativity Standards (updated mid-2025 and enforced increasingly hard through 2026) require sellers to be transparent about AI use. Skipping it is one of the most common reasons AI-made listings get removed.
The good news: complying takes about thirty seconds per listing. When you create your listing, in the “How it’s made” section:
- Who made it: “I did” — you directed the AI with prompts and did the editing, which is exactly what this workflow is.
- What tools were used: check “An AI generator” (and “Computerized tools or machines” if you’re using a POD printer).
- Add one honest line in your description, e.g. “Design created with AI assistance, then edited and finalized by us.”
Also make sure your design doesn’t include copyrighted characters, brand names, or a living artist’s signature style — AI will happily generate trademark infringement if you ask it to, and “the AI made it” is not a defense. step 6 — upload to your pod supplier and check the quality rating
Now the fun part: turning the file into a product. Upload your print file to a POD supplier like Printful or Printify, place it on a product, and check the quality rating they show you. Printful rates every file — you want “Good / 300 DPI.” If it says “Okay,” stop and go back to step 3; never publish a product on an “Okay” file.
Order a sample of your first design before you promote anything. Colors print differently than screens display, and a $15 sample beats a one-star review.

The design side of a POD business in 2026 costs less per month than one screen-printed sample did in 2020. The moat isn’t tools anymore — it’s taste, niche knowledge, and the willingness to do steps 3–5 when everyone else skips them.
