Gumroad Review 2020

I wanted to write my Gumroad review after recently launching my new eBook on the platform. Wow have I been impressed, the potential of this eCommerce platform for creators is mind blowing. Its is primarily targeted towards artists, designers, educators, writers, pod-casters and other influencers. It provides an all in one eCommerce & Marketing platform for selling primarily digital products but you can list physical products as well.

How Does Gumroad Work?

In the new world of social media influencers and online mentors, there is big money to be made by building an audience. The platform Gumroad has created helps you to both build an audience and market products to them. It is super easy to set up and fees are very low with a Free plan or $10 per month upgrade. Once you have created a profile, you can start adding products for sale and collecting email addresses from your audience.

Digital products like eBooks and courses are the most popular on the platform but you can sell physical goods as well. If you make a sale Gumroad take care of payment processing and the customers email is saved to your list for potential future marketing. There are some great marketing tools that allow you to send automated email workflows to specific customers and followers. You can even set up affiliates to promote your products and Gumroad will make sure they get paid.

As of December 2019 Gumroad has paid out $239 million to its merchants on the platform.

Selling On Gumroad

If you are a creator looking to sell things like eBooks on Gumroad, there are some amazing features. I am going to go through them below and cover off my experience using them as a seller.

Gumroad Creator Profile

The first thing you need to do is create a profile page, this is were you will showcase yourself and your products. It is super simple to do, you can personalize it with a profile image, background image/color and bio. Some of the customization options require you to upgrade your account.

Products

I have used a lot of eCommerce platforms over the years but none were as easy as Gumroad to create product listing. Add your images, write your description and various settings like price, then you are good to go. Payment processing is all taken care of by Gumroad so no need for any third party processors.

Product Types

• Classic: Start selling digital or physical products straight away
• Pre-Order: Start advertising your product and collect pre-orders
• Membership: Set up a monthly recurring payment product

With digital products like eBooks you upload your digital file to Gumroad. If you make a sale they will automatically send it your customer. They also keep an online version available for your customer in their own online library. You can also select for each copy to be stamped with your buyers details (helps with copyright infringement).

Customers

One of the things I like about Gumroad is that you get to keep your customers. Unlike selling on somewhere like Amazon or Etsy where you have no ownership of your customers and cannot build a following. In the customer section you can see every customer that has either made a purchase, downloaded a freebie or signed up to follow you.

You can access all your customers email addresses, this means you can send them newsletters, posts and build a relationship. It even lets you download your email list if you wanted to use third party email marketing software.

Workflows

Another handy feature on Gumroad is the ability to set up automated email sequences called "Workflows". For example you could offer your followers a free mini eBook to download. Then using workflows you could set up an series of automated follow up emails to only send to them customers. They are so simple to set up as well, no complicated set up just write your content and save.

Posts

Once you have started to build up an email list on Gumroad, you can then send out regular emails via the platform. No need for any third party software, just create your email and send straight away or schedule it. Free accounts are limited to 4 posts per month.

Sending Options:

• Everyone
• Followers only
• Customers only

Another great feature is the ability to segment customers. You can choose to send certain emails just to customers who purchased or downloaded a certain product.

Analytics

Gumroad has built in as standard a number of very useful analytics tools. Once again very easy to use and the charts look great. You can look at sales and views over any time period. This can be broken down by product if desired. More importantly you can see where your traffic and sales are coming from by referring domain.

You can even see consumption stats for customers that have viewed your material online and follower growth charts.

Gumroad Affiliates

You are probably already super impressed with all the features built into Gumroad but it gets even better. The jewel in the crown for me is the built in ability to add affiliates for your product.

With just an email address, you can give people a split of any sales they make when sharing or promoting your products. No money needs to swap hands, its all taken care of by Gumroad 🤯.

This is a very powerful feature, you can create your own network of affiliate marketers promoting your products. No trust required because Gumroad handle the money. Its one that has worked very well for me when using the platform.

Gumroad Pricing & Fees

Given how great and feature packed Gumroad is, you might expect it to be expensive? Wrong, it is free to register and most of the features are free to use (with some limitations). Even the upgraded plan is still ONLY $10/m, which I think is amazing value for money.

Free Account

A free account can do the following:

• Create and customize a Gumroad storefront
• Sell as many products as you want
• Send out up to 4 updates per month
• Set up 1 automated email workflow
• Fee on each sale will be 8.5% + $0.30 (USD)

Premium Account

Gumroad’s premium features are $10/month (or $108/year), and the fee on each sale shrinks to 3.5% + $0.30 (USD) per sale. Gumroad’s premium features include:

• Unlimited posts and workflows for your customers
• Custom CSS and updates
• Third party analytics (Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel etc)
• Custom delivery products
• The ability to use custom domains
• Importing customers and followers

Gumroad App Review

Gumroad has two different apps available, one for creator and one for customers who have bought products on the platform. See the details below of the two apps.

Gumroad Dashboard app

The dashboard app is for content creators and is for tracking sales, sales notifications etc. Most features cannot be accessed in app but can be accessed on a mobile browser. Its currently only available for iOS but they working on one for Android.

Gumroad Library App

The library app provides a simple way for your customers to read, listen to Gumroad products they have purchased from you. This is available on iOS and Android mobile devices.

Gumroad Tutorials

I honestly think that the Gumroad platform is so easy to use and intuitive that the best thing to do is give it a try. Click on the different tabs and make a test product. The help section is also super useful and covers everything you need to know, this can be found HERE.
